Hello, HERBalachia Community!
The holidays are just around the corner, and I am absolutely buzzing with excitement! For me, this season is all about slowing down, connecting with the plants around us as they also settle in for the winter, and adding a personal touch to every celebration.
This year, I'm ditching the store-bought rush and attempting to hand-make all of my gifts. I created the Holiday Makers Workshop Series for you to come with me on this journey! We'll be diving deep into holiday herbs, plants, flavors, and crafts. Gathering together over warm drinks, beverages, and snacks to create beautiful gifts and memories.
To kick things off, let's talk about food. You know those cozy, familiar flavors of Thanksgiving and Christmas; the sage, the cinnamon, the bitter greens? It turns out our ancestors weren't just picking them for taste. They were stocking their winter herbal pantry with ingredients chosen for powerful medicinal and digestive actions. They truly knew best!
We use dozens of herbs and spices during the holidays, but they all serve one primary goal: helping us survive the feast! Traditional foods are heavy, rich in fats, and often very sweet. Our bodies need support to digest that load, especially during the cold months when our metabolism naturally slows down.
Your holiday cooking employs a brilliant dual-action strategy:
The Stimulators: Bitters and Cholagogues (The Fat Fighters)
These are the greens and herbs that stimulate your body’s main fat-digesting organs, the liver and gallbladder.
Action: When you taste something truly Bitter (like Collard Greens or the earthiness of Sage), it signals your body to release digestive juices and, crucially, bile.
Why We Need Them: Bile is essential for emulsifying fats. That side of Bitter Greens or the heavy use of Rosemary on the ham isn't just flavor, it’s a necessary herbal aid to break down all the rich butter and meat grease. They are your natural defense against post-meal sluggishness!
The Settlers: Carminatives (The Cramp Relievers)
These are the warming, aromatic spices we use in everything from turkey dressing to eggnog.
Action: Carminatives contain volatile oils that help relax the muscles of the digestive tract. This stops painful spasms and helps expel trapped gas.
Why We Need Them: They prevent the common discomforts of overeating, such as cramping, bloating, and gas. They keep your stomach calm while the Bitters do the heavy work!
The genius of traditional holiday food is the combination of these elements:
Digestive Support: Use Bitter Greens, Rosemary, and Sage to break down fats, and use Ginger, Cinnamon, and Cloves to soothe the stomach and prevent gas.
Warming & Metabolism: Use Cinnamon, Ginger, and Black Pepper as circulatory stimulants to increase internal warmth from the core and fight the winter chill.
Mood & Energy (Uplifting): Use bright aromas and nutrients like Orange, Pine, and Peppermint to clear the mind and boost your spirits during the short, dark days.
To help you appreciate every spice, I’ve put together a free eBook with quick refernce charts detailing the exact traditional reason for every major holiday flavor, organized into three categories: Thanksgiving Staples, Warming Spice Blends, Mid-Winter Flavors
I can't wait to share more with you all during the HERBalachia Holiday Makers Series! Whether you're making a batch of warming Chai spice blend or infusing Pine tips for a winter tonic, we are going to celebrate the season with intention and incredible flavor.
Happy (and healthy) cooking!
Thankfully,
Kat
