Hello, beloved HERBalachia family and friends!
As the dog days of summer gently begin to transition to slightly cooler temps, we're filled with immense gratitude and excitement reflecting on everything we've been up to and looking forward to what's on the horizon. This season has been a whirlwind of learning, connection, and growth, and we couldn't have done it without our incredible community!
A Summer of Growth and Connection
Our summer has been buzzing with activity, both behind the scenes and out in the community. We've been diligently planning for the much-anticipated Sassafras Moon Herbal Festival, pouring our hearts into creating an unforgettable experience for everyone.
We've also had the privilege of attending some fantastic local herbal conventions and events, soaking up knowledge and connecting with fellow plant enthusiasts. From the insightful discussions at Medicines From The Earth to the enriching experiences at AHG's Roots & Renewal and the wonderful NC Herb Association's Wild Herb Weekend, each event has deepened our passion and expanded our understanding of the plant world.
And speaking of understanding, our 2025 Herbalist Lifestyle Program classes have been absolutely awesome so far! We've delved into fascinating topics like Medicinal Mushrooms and inoculated and took home our own shiitake logs with Rodney Webb of Appalachia Fungorum, explored the foundations of Botany with Dr. Tim McDowell, and learned the art of Tinctures with Lesley of Appalachian Alchemy and Oils with Janelle of Twin Flower Botanicals. Julia Thie has guided us through Herbal Energetics and Flower Essences, while River Fern Bryant of River Song Massage and Phil Smith have opened our minds to Plant Spirit Medicine. Cindi Quay of Cindi’s Sacred Garden led us in a powerful Native American Ceremony and we made comfrey and calendula salves. Most recently, Dr. Michelle Bouton of Erwin Acupuncture (& HERBalachia’s founder!) introduced us to Chinese Medicine and Lori Collins Jenkins of Sister of Mother Earth guided us on a full day of hands-on Kitchen Medicine making, mutual aid, and herbal business education. We're so proud of our students and their dedication to this journey! We have 2 more months of the 2025 Herbalist Lifestyle Program left and we can’t wait to see everyone’s Materia Medica and Deep Dive Projects!
We had a fantastic two-part Beginners Beekeeping Workshop on May 31st and June 1st with beekeeper Phil Rizzuto, right outside of Erwin, TN. It was an incredible experience where we got to meet some queens, handle equipment, and even pet some bees! We learned so much about the fascinating world of beekeeping. Stay tuned for more beekeeping classes coming soon!
Around the Summer Solstice in June, we also hosted a powerful St. John's Wort Intensive Workshop led by Janelle King of Twin Flower Botanicals. We had a great group of people join us to learn about this incredible plant and made a pint of St. John's Wort oil to take home which is a truly potent topical medicine!
July brought us a delightful Summer Botanical Mixology workshop. Despite a little rain trying to dampen our spirits, we had a fantastic time crafting delicious, plant-infused beverages! It was a true testament to the joy and resilience of our community.
